My Quest for Faith in a faithless world
Dan Mooney grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where much of his childhood was spent racing BMX, exploring the desert with friends, and living what seemed like a normal suburban life. Yet behind the everyday rhythm of sports, school, and friendships, Dan carried a deep curiosity about faith and spirituality.
From an early age, he wrestled with questions of God, religion, and the meaning of life. Those questions followed him into adulthood, shaping his perspective and fueling the stories and reflections shared in this book.
Blending his love for the outdoors, his adventures, and his search for spiritual understanding, Dan offers a unique lens on what it means to grow, struggle, and ultimately find connection in unexpected places—including the man in his grandparent’s bathroom door.

Preface
This memoir has been more than twenty years in the making. For most of that time, I wasn’t even sure I was writing a memoir. I was simply living and collecting stories, reflecting on experiences, and trying to make sense of the world around me. Eventually, I realized that meaning doesn’t arrive all at once. It arrives in fragments. A childhood memory that refuses to fade. A dog that seems to understand you better than most people. A moment alone on a mountain when time slows to a crawl.

When I first began, I thought I was searching for answers. What I discovered instead is that answers are never as important as the questions we live with, the moments we notice, and the quiet ways life speaks to us when we actually pay attention. What you are about to read is not a manual or a doctrine. It is simply my story. A story of trying to understand what it means to be alive, to be human, to find guidance in places that do not fit neatly into anyone’s definition of faith or logic.
I hope that as you read, you feel encouraged to pause and notice the meaning already woven into your own days, because it is there, whether we name it or not.

As a child, my perspective shifted the day I discovered my parents had not been truthful with me. That single revelation cracked open my world and left me searching for something solid to hold onto. But how does someone find spirituality when raised without religion, without references to God, and without any belief in something greater?

For me, the absence of tradition became an opportunity. With no framework handed down to me, I had to build my own. Every experience, every connection, every choice became a piece of the puzzle that would eventually shape my values and beliefs.

Life is both simple and complex, filled with moments that ripple across years. The question is how we navigate them while staying true to ourselves. In my own search, I discovered a guiding presence. It was not a deity, not a doctrine, and not a voice from any religion I knew. It was something quieter, yet more direct. A presence that offered direction in unexpected places and often when I least expected it.

That presence ultimately led me to the most surprising revelation of all,
The Man in My Grandparents’ Bathroom Door.
